Fitting Gas Stove

To fit a gas stove safely, you need to connect the appliance to the gas supply using approved fittings, test every connection for leaks, make sure the installation meets Australian Standards, and have the work completed by a licensed gas fitter. While it might sound straightforward, gas appliance installation is one of those jobs where getting a small detail wrong can create serious safety risks.

At All Needs Plumbing, we’ve installed gas stoves in homes and commercial kitchens throughout St George, including family homes in Kogarah, renovated properties around Carlton, and local restaurants near Railway Parade. One thing we’ve learned is that every installation is different. The age of the property, the condition of the gas line, and the type of appliance all affect how the job should be completed.

Whether you’re upgrading your kitchen, replacing an old cooker, or fitting out a commercial kitchen, understanding the installation process helps you make informed decisions and avoid costly mistakes.

Preparation Before Fitting a Gas Stove

Before any installation begins, it’s important to choose the right appliance for your property and cooking needs.

For homeowners in St George, this may mean selecting a freestanding cooker for a family kitchen or a sleek gas cooktop for a renovation project. For restaurant owners, reliability, cooking capacity, and compliance requirements are often the top priorities.

You’ll also need the correct fittings, connectors, shut-off valves, and testing equipment. While licensed gas fitters bring these materials with them, understanding what’s involved can help you appreciate why professional installation matters.

Many of the older homes around Kogarah and Rockdale were built decades ago and may require additional upgrades before a new gas stove can be connected safely. In some cases, we find ageing gas lines, outdated isolation valves, or inadequate ventilation that must be addressed before installation can proceed.

Pro-Tip: Before purchasing a new gas stove, check the manufacturer’s installation specifications. Knowing the required clearances and gas supply requirements can save you from buying an appliance that doesn’t suit your existing setup.

Removing the Existing Gas Stove

The first step is always safety.

The gas supply must be isolated before disconnecting the existing appliance. Once the gas is turned off, the old stove can be carefully moved to access the gas connection.

At this stage, a licensed gas fitter will inspect the existing gas line and fittings. This inspection often reveals issues that aren’t visible from the outside.

I remember attending a stove replacement job in Kogarah where the homeowner thought it would be a simple swap-over. Once we pulled the old appliance out, we discovered corrosion on part of the gas connection behind the unit. Catching that issue before connecting the new stove prevented what could have become a dangerous gas leak later on.

That’s one reason why professional inspections during replacement projects are so valuable.

Installation Process

Once the existing appliance has been removed and the gas line inspected, the new gas stove can be connected.

This process typically involves:

  • Installing approved gas fittings
  • Applying gas-rated thread sealant where required
  • Connecting the flexible gas hose
  • Securing all connections correctly
  • Positioning the appliance
  • Levelling the stove
  • Testing the installation

The exact process varies depending on the appliance model and manufacturer’s requirements.

Disconnect and Remove the Old Stove

Before you do anything, turn off the gas supply! Then, pull the old stove away from the wall to access the flexible gas line.

Attach the New Flexible Gas Line to the Supply Pipe:

1. Wrap yellow Teflon tape around the male connector on the black supply pipe.

2. Carefully thread the flexible gas line connector onto the supply pipe connector by hand, ensuring the threads are not damaged.

3. Hold the black supply line connector with an adjustable wrench while tightening the flexible gas connector fitting. Make it snug, but don’t go crazy tight.

Hook up the flexible gas line to the stove.

1. Add a connector fitting to the threaded fitting at the back of the stove.

2. Thread the flared end of the connector onto the stove fitting by hand, but don’t use Teflon tape here.

3. Tighten the connector with an adjustable wrench until it’s snug.

4. Wrap Teflon tape around the square end of the connector.

5. Thread the flexible gas line’s connector end onto the stove connector’s square end by hand.

6. Use the adjustable wrench to hold the stove connector still as you tighten the flexible gas connector fitting.

Final Steps

1. Cover the cutout’s inside edges with foil tape to protect against heat damage.

2. Carefully place the cooktop into the cutout, screwing it in tightly without overdoing it.

3. Slide the range into its spot, ensuring it’s aligned properly. Use the levelling feet to adjust if needed.

A proper installation isn’t just about making the stove work. It’s about ensuring the appliance operates safely, efficiently, and in compliance with Australian regulations.

Pro-Tip: Take a photo of the compliance plate and model number before installation. If you ever need warranty support, servicing, or replacement parts, having that information readily available can save a lot of time.

Safety and Compliance

Gas Line Connection and Safety

Working with a flexible gas line and ensuring everything is connected correctly requires specialist tools and a good understanding of what you’re doing. Teflon tape is your best friend here to prevent leaks.

Pro-Tip: Never skip the gas leak test. It is a simple step that will save you time and effort.

Testing and Inspection

Once the gas cooktop is installed, ensure everything is safe and would. Check every part to ensure that it works smoothly. Check that there are no gas leaks and that all connections are safe and secure.

Here’s a quick safety checklist:

1. Check the gas line connection to be sure it’s secure and leak-free.

2. Test for gas leaks with dishwashing soap.

3. Ensure the shutoff valve is working and easy to get to.

4. Use pipe joint compound or Teflon tape on gas connections.

5. Keep safe from anything that could catch fire around the cooktop.

6. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for where to put the range hood or exhaust fan. The Australian Standard AG/601-AS5601 says there should be a vertical distance of 600mm from a flammable surface.

Why Gas Leak Testing Is Essential

Every gas connection must be tested before the appliance is commissioned.

Gas leak testing helps confirm that all fittings are secure and that no gas is escaping from the system.

Professional gas fitters use specialised testing equipment designed to detect even minor leaks that may not be visible during a visual inspection.

Although some online guides suggest using soapy water as a basic leak test, this should never replace professional pressure testing and safety checks.

A thorough inspection provides peace of mind that your family, staff, customers, and property are protected.

Gas Stove Installation Requirements in St George

Gas appliance installation across St George must comply with Australian Standards and NSW regulations.

This includes requirements relating to:

  • Gas line connections
  • Appliance clearances
  • Ventilation
  • Isolation valves
  • Compliance certification
  • Appliance commissioning

Many homes throughout suburbs such as Kogarah, Hurstville, Carlton, and Blakehurst have undergone renovations over the years. Renovation work can sometimes affect ventilation or cabinet clearances, making a professional site assessment especially important before installation.

For commercial kitchens, additional compliance requirements often apply due to higher gas loads and more demanding operating conditions.

Gas Oven Installation Considerations

Gas ovens have different installation requirements compared to gas cooktops.

Clearances, ventilation requirements, and manufacturer specifications vary significantly between models.

Because of these differences, every installation should follow the appliance manufacturer’s instructions in addition to relevant Australian Standards.

A licensed gas fitter will ensure the appliance is installed correctly and can provide the required compliance documentation once the work is complete.

Understanding the Gas Certificate of Compliance

Whenever gas installation work is carried out, a Certificate of Compliance is generally required.

This certificate confirms that the work has been completed by a licensed professional and complies with applicable safety regulations.

Without the appropriate certification, you may encounter issues with insurance claims, property sales, future renovations, or gas supply services.

It’s one of those documents many people don’t think about until they need it. That’s why we always recommend keeping a copy somewhere safe after the installation is completed.

Commercial Gas Stove Installations

Commercial kitchens rely heavily on properly installed gas equipment.

Restaurants, cafés, catering facilities, and hospitality venues throughout St George need appliances that perform consistently under demanding conditions.

Commercial installations often involve:

  • High-capacity cooktops
  • Commercial ovens
  • Griddles
  • Restaurant ranges
  • Catering equipment
  • Additional gas line upgrades

Beyond performance, proper installation helps minimise downtime, reduce repair costs, improve efficiency, and support workplace safety compliance.
