Drainage That Actually Takes the Water Away

Bad drainage doesn’t stay a lawn problem. Left alone, water works its way under the house, into foundations and walls, and washes soil and mulch out of the garden every time it rains.

That’s why we find the actual cause before we quote anything. Then we design a fix that suits your block, install it properly, and back it with our Lifetime Labour Warranty.

What Does a Stormwater Drainage Plumber Do?

A stormwater drainage plumber designs, installs, repairs and maintains the system that carries rainwater away from your property. That’s the pipes, pits, grates, soakwells and surface drains moving water from your roof, yard and paving to a legal point of discharge. Unlike a surface-only fix, a licensed plumber can find the real cause and make the drainage compliant.

Stormwater is separate from your sewer. It carries clean rainwater off your property, usually to the street kerb or an approved drain, and it’s designed for the roof area and paved surfaces it has to handle. When it’s undersized, damaged or was never installed properly, the water has nowhere to go and it ends up in your yard or under your house.

Signs Your Stormwater Drainage Isn’t Working

Most drainage problems show themselves during or just after heavy rain. Call us if you notice any of these:

  • Water pooling on the lawn, paths or driveway: A yard that stays boggy for days after rain usually isn’t draining anywhere.
  • Water running toward the house: Water pooling against walls or under the house is the one to act on quickly, because that’s where the expensive damage starts.
  • Soil, mulch or gravel washing away: If every storm rearranges your garden, surface water is running across your block instead of into a drain.
  • Stormwater drains or grates overflowing: Often a sign the system is undersized, damaged or blocked.
  • Gutters and downpipes spilling at ground level: Roof water that isn’t piped away properly just dumps at the base of your house.
  • Damp, mould or a musty smell in lower rooms: Water sitting against or under the building is getting in.

If it’s a one-off blockage rather than a drainage problem, we’ll tell you that and just clear it. You don’t need a new drainage system to fix a drain full of leaves, and we’d rather sort it and be honest about it. Have a look at our
blocked drains service if that sounds more like your issue.

How Much Does Stormwater Drainage Cost in Sydney?

The cost of stormwater drainage depends on the size of the job. A single surface drain or one new pit is a modest job. A full drainage redesign, a soakwell system, or excavating and replacing a collapsed line costs more. A no-dig reline is often cheaper than digging out a long run of pipe.

At All Needs Plumbing you always get an upfront, fixed price approved before we start. There are no surprises on your final bill.

Our Stormwater Drainage Services

We handle stormwater end to end across Sydney:

    • Diagnosis with CCTV: We camera the line to find blockages, cracks, root damage or bad falls before we quote. See CCTV pipe inspection.
    • New stormwater drains and pipes: Designed and sized for your roof area, block and soil type.
  • Stormwater pits, sumps and grates: Installed, upgraded or repaired.
  • Surface and backyard drainage: Strip, channel and spoon drains to stop water pooling and running across lawns, paths and driveways.
  • Soakwells, ag pipe and absorption trenches: To disperse water into the ground where connecting to the street isn’t possible.
  • Downpipe and gutter connection: So roof water is captured and piped away rather than dumped at the surface. See gutter cleaning.
  • Stormwater repairs and relining: Pipe relining repairs a cracked or root-damaged line from the inside, without digging up the yard.
  • Council compliance: We make sure the work meets Sydney council requirements, including your legal point of discharge.

Not sure which of these you need? That’s what the free quote is for. Give us a call or book online and we’ll come and work it out with you.

Do You Need Council Approval?

New or altered stormwater drainage usually has to meet council requirements, including a legal point of discharge. That’s the approved place your stormwater is allowed to go: the street kerb, an inter-allotment drainage easement, or an on-site system like a soakwell. Which one applies depends on your block and how it sits.

In most cases you’re responsible for the stormwater pipes on your own property, right up to the point where they connect to the council’s system or your approved discharge point. The council looks after the street drainage from there.

We work out the compliant solution for your property and handle the drainage side properly, so you’re not left with work that has to be pulled up and redone.

Keep Your Property Dry This Storm Season

Drainage problems only get more expensive the longer they’re left, because the water keeps working on your soil, your paving and your foundations.

Rest easy knowing we’re fully licensed and every job is backed by our Lifetime Labour Warranty. Get in touch for a free quote and find out why we’re rated 4.9/5 from over 670 Google reviews.

Recent Stormwater Work in Grays Point

A Grays Point homeowner called us because every decent rain was washing the ground away down the side of his property. There was nowhere for the surface water to go, so it was running across the block and taking the soil with it.

We installed a strip drain and a pit down that side, piped the full run and connected it into the existing downpipes, so the roof water and the surface water both had somewhere to go. Then we backfilled the trench along the side of the house.

We came back to finish the backfill in the back yard, cleared out the leftover bricks and debris, and hosed the whole area down before we left. A drainage job isn’t finished when the pipe’s in the ground. It’s finished when the yard looks like we were never there.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a stormwater drainage plumber do?

We design, install, repair and maintain the system that carries rainwater away from your property. That covers the pipes, pits, grates, soakwells and surface drains that move water from your roof and yard to a legal point of discharge. As licensed plumbers we find the actual cause of a drainage problem rather than treating the symptom.

Why is water pooling in my yard and not draining away?

Usually because the drainage is undersized, blocked, damaged, laid at the wrong fall, or there’s simply nowhere for the water to go. We inspect the site, camera the lines where we need to, and tell you which one it is before quoting anything.

Who is responsible for stormwater drains, me or the council?

You’re generally responsible for the stormwater pipes on your own property, up to the point where they connect to the council’s system or your approved discharge point. The council looks after the street drainage beyond that. If you’re not sure where the boundary sits on your block, we can work it out when we come and quote.

Do I need council approval for stormwater drainage work?

New or altered stormwater drainage usually has to meet council requirements, including a legal point of discharge. Requirements vary between councils, so we check what applies to your property and make sure the drainage side is done compliantly the first time.

Can you repair a stormwater drain without digging up my yard?

Often, yes. Where a line is cracked or damaged by tree roots, pipe relining repairs it from the inside with little or no excavation. It’s faster and far tidier than digging the pipe out, and it usually costs less on a long run.

How much does stormwater drainage cost?

It depends on the size of the job. A single surface drain or pit is modest, while a full redesign or replacing a collapsed line costs more. You’ll always get an upfront, fixed price to approve before we start, plus free call-outs from 7:00am to 4:00pm, Monday to Friday, $50 off your first service and a 10% seniors’ discount.

My stormwater drain is blocked, can you help?

Yes. If it’s a blockage rather than a drainage design problem, we’ll clear it and camera the line to check there’s no damage behind it. See our blocked drains service. You don’t need new drainage to fix a drain full of leaves, and we’ll tell you if that’s all it is.
