What Should I Do if a Pipe Bursts?

Turn off your water at the mains straight away. The tap is usually near your front boundary or water meter. If water is anywhere near power points or wiring, switch the electricity off at the meter box too. Then open a cold tap to drain the pipes, put down buckets and towels, and call a 24-hour plumber. The sooner the water is off, the less damage is done.

Once the water’s off, you’ve done the most important part. Call us on 1300 110 230 and we’ll talk you through the rest while a licensed plumber is on the way.

Not sure where your water meter is? Call us anyway and we’ll help you find it over the phone.

Signs You Have a Burst Pipe

A burst pipe isn’t always a dramatic flood. If it’s underground or behind a wall, the first sign is usually something small. Call us if you notice any of these:

  • A sudden drop in water pressure: Often the first sign that water is escaping somewhere before it reaches your taps.
  • Water pooling inside, or a soggy patch in the yard: A wet area of lawn or garden that never dries out usually means a burst underground pipe.
  • The sound of running water with every tap off: A reliable sign of a leak inside a wall, under the floor or underground.
  • A water bill that’s jumped for no reason: A hidden burst can waste thousands of litres before anyone notices.
  • Damp patches, bubbling paint or stains on walls and ceilings: Water is getting out somewhere behind them.
  • Discoloured or dirty water from your taps: Can point to a cracked or corroded pipe letting dirt into your water supply.

Not every leak is a burst. A dripping tap or a slow leak under the sink can usually wait until the morning, and we’d rather tell you that than send someone out at an after-hours rate. If you’re not sure which one you’ve got, call us and we’ll help you work it out.

What Causes Pipes to Burst?

Pipes usually burst for one of six reasons: corrosion in ageing metal pipes, water pressure that’s too high, tree roots growing into and cracking the pipe, ground movement in Sydney’s reactive clay soils, water hammer (that banging noise when a tap shuts off), and poor workmanship from a previous repair.

Finding out why the pipe failed matters just as much as the repair itself. A patch on a pipe that burst because of high pressure will simply burst again somewhere else.

High water pressure is the one most people never think to check. It puts constant strain on every pipe, joint and flexi hose in the house, and it’s a common cause of sudden failures. If we find your pressure is too high, we’ll tell you and fit a pressure limiting valve to protect the rest of your plumbing.

For pipes that are old or have burst more than once, pipe relining is often a better long-term fix than another spot repair.

Pipes We Repair

Our licensed plumbers repair and replace every common pipe type, including:

  • Copper and metal pipes: Splits, corrosion and pinhole leaks.
  • PVC and poly pipes: Cracks, splits and failed joints.
  • Water mains and underground pipes: Located with leak detection so we can limit the digging.
  • Hot water lines: Including a burst pipe on your hot water system.
  • Whatever’s burst, give us a call or book online and we’ll get it located and repaired.

How Much Does Burst Pipe Repair Cost in Sydney?

The cost of repairing a burst pipe depends on where the pipe is, how easy it is to reach, and how much damage there is. An accessible pipe under a sink is a straightforward job. An underground or concealed burst that needs locating and excavating costs more.

At All Needs Plumbing you always get an upfront, fixed price approved before we start. There are no surprises on your final bill.

At All Needs Plumbing, we offer $50 off your first service and a 10% seniors’ discount. Plus, we offer free call-outs from 7:00am to 4:00pm, Monday to Friday.

Don’t Wait on a Burst Pipe

Every minute a burst pipe runs, the water damage and the repair bill both get bigger. Turn off your mains, then call the local plumbers who can find it fast and fix it properly.

Rest easy knowing we’re fully licensed and every job is backed by our Lifetime Labour Warranty. Call now to get a plumber on the way.

Recent Burst and Leaking Pipe Work in Arncliffe

An Arncliffe homeowner called us about water leaking away under the side of their property. Our plumber found it almost straight away: the copper water service running through the subfloor had corroded through and was leaking under the house.

We cut out the damaged section of the water service and ran new copper pipework through the brick piers under the property, then reinstated the water supply and tested it. All the old pipe and rubbish went with us.

Corrosion is the most common reason older copper pipes fail, and it’s rarely confined to the one spot that’s leaking. Replacing the run instead of patching the hole is what stops you calling a plumber back about the same pipe six months later.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I do if a pipe bursts in my home?

Turn off your water at the mains straight away to stop the flooding, and switch the power off at the meter box if water is near any wiring or power points. Open a cold tap to drain the pipes, put down buckets, and call us on 1300 110 230. We’re available 24/7 and we’ll talk you through it.

Is a burst pipe an emergency?

Yes. A burst pipe can cause thousands of dollars of water damage in a few hours, so it’s always worth calling straight away rather than waiting until morning. A real person answers our phone at any hour, and we’ll get a licensed plumber to you as fast as we can. See our emergency plumber service.

Can you find a burst pipe that’s underground or behind a wall?

Yes. We use proper leak detection equipment to pinpoint hidden and underground bursts, so we only dig or open up where the pipe actually is. It saves you the cost and mess of digging up a whole yard or pulling apart a wall to go looking.

Why do pipes burst?

Usually corrosion in ageing pipes, water pressure that’s too high, tree roots, ground movement in clay soils, water hammer, or a poor repair done in the past. We find the cause as well as fixing the pipe, because a patch on a pipe that burst from high pressure will just burst again somewhere else.

Does insurance cover a burst pipe?

Most home and contents policies cover the sudden water damage a burst pipe causes, but not the cost of repairing the pipe itself, and they generally won’t cover damage from a leak that’s been happening slowly over time. Check your product disclosure statement or call your insurer. We can provide an itemised invoice describing the work for your claim.

Can renters organise a burst pipe repair in NSW?

Yes, in a genuine emergency. A burst water pipe is listed as an urgent repair under NSW tenancy law, so if you can’t reach your landlord or agent you can arrange it yourself. Check your residential tenancy agreement for any nominated tradespeople first. You can be reimbursed up to $1,000 for urgent repairs, though not if you caused the damage or didn’t try to contact them.

How quickly can you get to me?

We’re based in Kogarah, so we’re especially fast to St George, the Sutherland Shire and the Inner West. Wherever you are, we’ll give you an estimated arrival time when you call, and talk you through shutting the water off so the damage stops while we’re on the way.
