Sutherland Shire Council records show sewer works in Caringbah from the late 1950s. In lines that age we regularly find tree roots and joints that have shifted out of line.
Every home has an overflow relief gully, the grated fitting near the house that lets sewage spill in the yard instead of inside. When it overflows, or the toilet gurgles when the basin drains, the blockage is further down the line.

The soil across the Shire is sandy and a lot of blocks slope, so water moves fast in heavy rain. Pits and downpipes that cope most of the year can back up in a storm. If water pools against your house after rain, it’s often the stormwater line, not the sewer.
In October we were called back to an older Caringbah home where the sewer kept blocking.
Our camera found the cause. A pipe was badly dislodged where it joined the shaft just before the sewer connection, and tree roots were growing into a joint about 4m further up.
The next day the damaged section was relined with a patch liner and checked on camera. We cut the concrete, dug down to the shaft and replaced the old elbow with a new connection. Then we re-piped the house sewer line with a new junction for the toilet and replaced the damaged section upstream. After testing, we backfilled, concreted over, relaid the grass and cleaned up.

These drains had blocked for years. We cleared them first go with a jet blaster, then the camera found dislodged joints and roots. We replaced a broken terracotta bend, fitted two reline junctions and repaired the slab.
A Caringbah business had urinal cisterns that wouldn’t stop running. We fitted a new inlet valve, outlet valve and pull chain, tested it and cleaned up.
A toilet in a Caringbah factory unit was leaking at the supply. We replaced the inlet valve and tested it with no leaks.

It depends where the blockage is. Sydney Water looks after its sewer main.
The pipes on your property, up to where they join that main, are the owner's responsibility. A camera inspection shows which side the problem is on before you pay for any repair.
Often it's high water pressure. Australian Standards cap the pressure at your taps at 500 kPa, and mains pressure can run higher. A pressure limiting valve at the meter brings it down.
